Championship Show A February 2024 

Firstly a massive apology to the committee and exhibitors for the time it has taken me to produce my critique. An early whelping caused the initial delay which was then compounded by work and IT issues,  I hope I may be forgiven.

I was honoured and delighted to be invited to judge by the committee and to have such a great entry.   There was depth of quality throughout with the bitches taking the main honours. The rings are such a great size at this venue, giving everyone a chance to stride out, and I wasn’t disappointed. I do have to mention tails though, especially among the younger dogs, and I found it frustrating to see some promising exhibits let down by a near vertical tail carriage.

Minor Puppy Dog – 4 entries, 1 absent 

1. Tucker’s Walshaw One More Night 

          Lots to like about this 7m orange boy; lovely head & neck with good angulation throughout; balanced fore and aft with long lines and just the right amount of muscle for his age. Coat coming along nicely.  Moved out confidently and evenly.  Just losing out on maturity for BPD.

2. Ciaputa’s Ravensett Cote d’Azur
   8m orange, more upright than 1; nicely put together with level topline, short couplings, long thighs and low set hocks.  Moved happily if slightly erratic today.

Puppy Dog – 4 entries

1. Osman’s Bournehouse Sirocco over Marissolo 

          Well grown 11m striking tri.  Nicely built with a great head and angulation and lovely reach of neck.  Well off for bone and muscle and good strong pasterns.  Moved well.  BPD RBPIS   

2. Pitts & Normansell’s Larrenie Heartstopper

    

   11m orange, so close up to 1 in all respects and of similar build; just a little more upright in front and not quite so even on the move.

Veteran Dog – 6 entries

1. Loynd’s Sh Ch Crimbledale Sea the Skies JW ShCM 

          9 years young and still showing off all his great attributes and elegance.  A well-defined head and soft expression;  everything in proportion with his long lines and low hocks contributing to a wonderful exuberant movement.  Finished off with lashings of coat to complete the picture.  BVD but sadly couldn’t stay for the challenge.

2. Arkleys’ Sh Ch Hartsett Flash Dance
   Beautifully balanced, substantial orange, built on more upright lines. Presenting a handsome profile with a lovely layback of shoulder and elbows tight in. Well ribbed up and plenty of coat.   Not the freedom of movement of 1.

3. Collins’ Dyrham Playboy of Chilworth

Junior Dog – 4 entries

Another close decision with these 2 promising 13m boys matching each other in nearly every respect and both appearing to bear their father’s stamp.    Gorgeous heads with good reach of neck, well balanced with front and rear angulation in perfect proportion and good bend of stifle. Everything you could wish for and expect from these youngsters, including body, muscle and coat.  The blue just took the edge over the tri for overall balance and movement.

4. Miller’s Ravensett Calvaro

          18m orange boy, mature for his age; very nicely put together.  Pleasing head, good lay of shoulder, level back, nice bend of stifle and hocks well let down.  Moved out well and thankfully not as proud of his tail as some of his classmates.

2. Fisher & Withey’s Severnsett Black Prince

    

   Striking 18m dark tri, still a bit on the raw side. Well defined head with a kind expression, strong neck flowing into a level back, short couplings and long thighs.  Plenty of substance throughout.  Unfortunately suffering from a dead tail which hampered his movement.  He managed to pull it out of the bag in a final run round and show a  promising gait but sadly was unable to repeat it in a later class.

Maiden Dog – 1 entry

1. Sharnyx Saxonite

          A raw youngster, 3^rd in the puppy class, built on pleasing lines if a little upright in his stance.  Enough coat and bone for his age.  Moved more steadily than in the earlier class.

Novice Dog – 2 entries

1.       Hendrys’ Ilexset Sunny Disposition

Paler 18m tri presenting a handsome profile with level topline and good angulation.  Well ribbed up and with plenty of bone, finished off with excellent coat and feathers.  Moved well.

1. King’s Sirius Blue Heaven at Grantastar
   
   Tricolour boy built on finer lines. Presented a pleasing profile if somewhat upright in stance;  shown in good coat and condition and moved out steadily.  Just would have preferred more body.

    

Post Graduate Dog – 7 entries, 2 absent

Sadly another class where so many promising boys were overproud of their tails.

1. Carrs’ Balvenie Blue Lagoon

    

Dark blue of slightly smaller build.  Good front assembly with a handsome head and honest expression. Elegant in outline with good angulation and just the right amount of coat .  Moved out well with a great tail action.  BSpBD BSpB .  . 

2. Tucker’s Mariglen Nightwish for Walshaw

    

   Brighter blue, more upright and muscular than 1 and built on longer lines. Strong head and well-muscled neck leading into a level topline and well made hindquarters. Good width of thigh and plenty of coat though not the rib of 1.  Move well and not so proud of his tail as others.

Nicely proportioned orange with chiselled masculine head;  compact in outline with good angulation fore and aft.  Level topline, short coupled and good deep ribs.  Well off for bone and coat overall.  Moved well. 

2. Johnston’s Wansleydale Beguiled of Loonbrae

Smart, workmanlike  tri, made on similar lines.  Presents a balanced picture with great angulation and lots of good straight bone.  Moved out strongly.

Limit Dog – 7 entries

1.       Bishops’ Dyrham Desert Storm

Well matured  orange with classic profile and plenty of body and bone to go over. Balanced throughout with a beautiful head, clean neck, deep forechest and level topline.  Elbows and hock well let down and a super coat to finish.  Everything in perfect proportion.  Could have just wished for a freer, more extended movement.  Very close decision with 2 but just carried the class for me on overall construction. 

2. Simpsons’ Dalreavoch Northern Legend

    

   Eye catching, showy blue. Loads to like about this boy from his stunning head with perfect ear set to superb bend of stifle and short low hocks. Lots of substance finished off with lashings of coat, he covered the ring with an expansive movement.  .

Open Dog – 5 entries, 1 absent

1.       Watts’ Sh Ch Walshaw Brushstrokes

This very handsome dark tri ticks all the boxes.  Just the right amount of everything – classic head, long lean neck, superb layback of shoulder, level topline, elbows and hocks well let down with a magnificent coat to complete the picture.  Covered the ring with a free flowing stride to show everything off with a wonderful slashing tail. DCC. Didn’t think his movement would be bettered but he met a bitch in stunning form in the challenge. RBIS

2. Darleys’ Sh Ch Severnsett Firecracker

    

A brighter tri of similar age and substance presenting a very pleasing if slightly more upstanding profile. Masculine head with a well-muscled neck, good angulation with a great spring of rib and lovely long thighs and plenty of coat to match.  Just lost out to 1 on overall balance and presence on the day but happy to award him RDCC.

          Promising 8m tricolour girl maturing nicely.  Sweet head and expression, nicely proportioned with a good amount of substance but not overdone in any way.  Perfect amount of coat for her age, presented a nice picture stacked and on the move.

2. White’s Droveborough Silver Pearl for Paduan

    

   Finer built dark blue of 6m waiting for her feathers. Nicely balanced with a good depth of body and spring of rib and pleasing width of thigh.  Moved steadily.

1. Sykes’ Sharnyx Springtime at Daraquist

Smart 10m orange, mature for her age.  Beautifully balanced with a super head and sweet expression, level topline and excellent angulation.  Nothing overdone at this stage and promising a lot to come. Confident and steady on the move if a little roly-poly which was instantly forgiven.  BPB BP

2. Parrish’s Tawnymeade Tacazze Sunbird

    

Dark tri girl of finer build and longer, leaner lines;  not as finished as 1 with some filling out to do but has lots of time on her side. Coat coming along nicely.  Impressed with a sweet expression and confident movement.

3. Bailsbeedale Lady Annabella

   Veteran Bitch – 4 entries, 1 absent

    

   A meeting of 2 youthful 8 year old littermates both shown in wonderful coat and condition, the blue just pipping her sister with a more expansive movement

1. Loakes’ Sh Ch Rachdale Painted Lace at Goldbirch

    

   Looks belying her age, this classy girl still has it all – beautifully put together and in total balance. Gorgeous head with a slightly devilish expression, perfect angulation, spirit level straight topline and a lovely flowing coat to match.  Covered the ring with a free and easy stride.  BV

    

2. McCabe’s Sh Ch Rachdale Elegance

    

   Matching her sister on nearly every point this sweet orange scored extra on her superb bend of stifle and width of thigh. Just lost out on balance and freedom of movement.

1. Patons’ Bournehouse Eternal Flame for Meadowfoot

13m orange girl, impressing with a maturity beyond her classmates.  Exquisite head and sweet expression, lovely neck and shoulders, elbows and hocks well let down with a deep brisket and just the right amount of rib.  Finished off with a coat to envy.  Moved steadily.  Definitely one to watch.

2. Reids’ Hunterblue Mystique at Diersett

    

Lots to like about this very promising blue girl but just at that in between stage and not so finished as 1.  Made on longer lines with a lovely head and neck, good angulation and level topline with a perfect tailset.

          Very smart, self-assured, dark tri girl, neatly put together with clean lines and balanced outline.  Feminine head and a lovely arch of neck, level back and tail well set on.  As much coat as you could expect at this age.  Moved out confidently and steadily.

   Pretty blue girl, not the finish of 1 but of similar proportions. Not so tight in front but with good spring of rib and width of thigh.  Happy mover.

Lighter blue girl showing plenty of everything – bone, coat, angulation. Well ribbed up with a level topline. Handler tended to stack her with a sloping topline but this was not at all evident in her movement where she covered the ring well using her tail properly.

   Orange girl built on finer lines than 1 and not the width at the front. Otherwise clean and elegant in outline with a sweet expression and good coat.

          Attractive orange with a sweet head and expression.  Great forequarters with a perfect return of upper arm matching mirroring the rear angulation.  Just missing her best coat for the full picture.  A steady mover making good use of her tail.

1. Dennis, Harris & Morgan’s Mariglen Unwrapped JW

    

   More substantial tri, more upright in stance.  Plenty of body and coat with good width between the shoulders, great topline  and lovely low hocks.  Just lost out to 1 on overall balance and movement.

1. Watkins’ Valsett Starlite Night Sky

Eye-catching blue girl with lots of good bone and muscle.  Striking head with perfectly defined stop, occiput and ear set.  Muscular neck but not overdone.  Shoulders well laid back with a short level topline, great width of thighs and bend of stifle.  Strode out well.

2. Felton Blyth’s Wansleydale Sky Angel at Felsett

    

   Pretty blue girl, very feminine. Not the substance of 1 but presented an attractive profile with graceful lines and plenty of coat and feathering.  Moved steadily.

Very nicely put together and feminine blue with a very pleasing head.  Perfectly balanced with a great layback of shoulder, plenty of rib , good width and length of thigh and low hocks.  Shown in great coat.  A happy mover with a lively slashing tail if a tiny bit too proud of it.

          Upright orange with a more sculpted head.  Not the coat of 1 but well made with plenty of bone and showing off good angulation fore and aft.  Happy and balanced on the move with a great tail action.

1.       Pitts’ Nld Ch Vanquish Opportunity (Imp)

This eye-catching blue was on top form today and showing everything off to her advantage.  A very feminine head and confident expression, gorgeous long lines,          absolutely balanced and as much coat as you could wish for.  There were some good movers on the day but this girl took it up another 3 notches and absolutely owned the ring with her free and easy stride and slashing tail action – I could have watched her all day.  BCC and BIS.  I couldn’t help but note my fellow judge placed her top as well.

   A very feminine orange girl coming into her prime. Lots to like about her – classic head and outline, well bodied up with great angulation fore and aft, and a strong level topline. Just not so outgoing on the move as 1 but a worthy RBCC.

Class A – Don Christie Junior Memorial Junior Stakes (9:1)

A lovely class of youngsters in various stages of development.

1^st Stewart & Quenby’s Tattersett Stolen Silver

Blue Belton male of thirteen months, appealed for type and overall balance. This young male was presented in good coat and condition and is maturing along nicely. His masculine head is pleasantly balanced with low set ears and dark expressive eyes. Good length to his neck which fitted neatly into his shoulders. Decent spring of rib for his age and good depth to chest. Straight forelegs with good bone lead down to neat feet. Tail of the right length and set on correctly. Moved well.

2^nd Arkley’s Tattersett Blue Lord

Litter brother to first, so much applies. Elegant young male, of preferred size, reared well, in lovely coat with ample feathering. Correct dentition. Nicely constructed throughout with good angulation. Handsome balanced head. Was close competition between these two young males on the day.

Class B – Don Christie Memorial Open Stakes (17:4)

1^st Hepburn’s Tattersett Rainbow Legacy

Orange male of four years whom I have often admired. Nicely balanced, elegant outline, he presented a lovely picture when stood and was shown in fabulous coat with profuse feathering. Easy to go over, he is constructed well, nicely angulated fore and aft, with good return of upper arm and decent bend of stifle. Has good depth to chest, ribs are well sprung, and elbows close to his body. Masculine balanced head, oval skull, and moderate depth to muzzle. His dark eyes showed typical friendly expression. Moved with drive using strong short hocks and holding his head high.

2^nd Dykes Caleydene Connextion

Pretty orange bitch of two years, very feminine and elegant in outline. Liked her balanced head. Presented well and handled to advantage. In good coat and with ample feathering. Neck of desired length fitted cleanly into her shoulders, she has good depth to her chest, spring of rib and level short back. Good bend of stifle, short hocks, and neatest of feet. She moved well around the ring with good footfall and holding her topline.

1^st Darley’s Sh Ch Severnsett Firecracker

Handsome Tri male. Loved his head! Nicely balanced he stands over the right amount of ground for me. Constructed well throughout and easy to go over. His lean neck fits neatly into his shoulders, has good return of upper arm and pronounced sternum. Plenty of depth to chest, with ribs well sprung and neat at elbows. Desired length of back, level topline, with good width and slight arch to loins. Nice bend of stifle, good muscle tone to first and second thigh and short strong hocks. Presented in good coat and condition. Moved well, holding his head high and lashing his tail.

2^nd Wale’s Sh Ch Chanina Golden Rose JW

Lovely young orange bitch and another worthy of her Champion Status. Shown in lovely coat and condition, a credit to her owner! Very feminine balanced head with oval skull and well-defined stop. Expressive dark oval eyes, ears of correct length and low set. Thought her to be elegant, balanced and nicely angulated, thereby producing a lovely outline when stood. Her sound construction enabled good movement and footfall around the ring, which she did elegantly with her head held high.

My thanks to the society for the privilege of judging Dogs at their CH.show.

Well done to the committee for a well run friendly show. Thanks to my hard working stewards and the exhibitors for your entry .Pleased to say temperaments were excellent and overall I was happy. However sadly lack of muscle tone and in some cases excess weight, reflected in movement. I feel some further schooling is needed, too many dogs were leaning away from the lead, causing almost crab like forward movement. Today there were quite a few too proud of their tails which totally ruins the outline.

MINOR PUPPY DOG-: (4) 3

• DANKS-KEMISH-; RAVENSETT UNTOUCHABLE AMONG ALOLFRANA NAF TAF -: Really fell for this six month orange baby. Oozes personality and ‘English’ character .Balanced refined head with lovely soft expression. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, level topline, correct tail set. Good bend of stifle, well let down hocks. When settled he showed forward reach and correct foot fall. BPD RBPIS.
• FISHER & WITHEY-: SEVERNSETT BLACK PRINCE-: This young man has all the makings of a nice dog .Balanced all through with correct angulation. A little over awed by the occaision, needs to gain confidence to show off his attributes.
• BROMWICH-: ILEXESET PRIMARY COLOUR.

VETERAN DOG-: (4) 1

• KING-: DOBBIES DELIGHT AT GRANTASTAR-: Coming nine this blue presented a pleasing picture. Well constructed in all departments. Carrying ideal weight he maintained his topline on the move using his tail. Credit to his owner. Sadly in the challenge for best veteran he went slightly unlevel.

PUPPY DOG-: (2) 2

• WILLIAMSON-: HAWKLAWN SULTAN OF SWING-: Attractive 10mth tri. Built on correct lines, nice bone and feet, level topline and tail set. Head needs to break more which at this age I expect to see so does not become over done.In profile moves out well with good extension but really needs to tighten in front movement.
• WILLIAMS-: BOURNEHOUSE ABRACADABRA-: Lovely young boy who sadly would not let me fully go over him. Saw enough not to deny him his place. Super bone and body properties, moved soundly. I really hope he quickly gains his confidence.

JUNIOR DOG-: (1) 1

• KING-: SIRIUS BLUE HEAVEN AT GRANTASTAR-: 17mth tri. Nice head and expression. Presents a balanced picture, correct angles fore and aft. Level topline and correct tail set. Needs to tighten in front movement but in profile strides out well. Smart boy.

SPECIAL YEARLING-: (4) 4

• TAYLOR-: WANSLEYDALE MAYBEE-: This young blue dog ticked all the boxes today. Super clean outline with no exaggerations. Well balanced head, kind expression. Clean reachy neck leading to well laid shoulders, correct depth of chest and heart room. Well ribbed up to good bend of stifle, depth through second thigh. Hocks short and well let down. He has a level topline with correct tail set. On the move he showed good extension and drive, lashing his tail. Put down in super fit condition. CC BD. Joint decision with my fellow judge BIS.
• WATKIN-: VALSETT STARLITE SUN CHASER-: Super orange boy, took me back to dogs of the past. Loved his balanced head and super kind expression. So correct in shoulders and stifles. Great depth , well ribbed up. Stood on good bone and feet. Topline is level with correct tail set. He moves sound and true .Once he gains experience and confidence will trouble the best. One I would take home.

• WHITTINGTON-: JULDEANE LINE OF DUTY (A I)-: This orange has an appealing balanced head with true setter expression. Overall he has good conformation especially his stifles with depth of second thigh and well let down hocks. Please take care and time to stand his front correctly. Moved out well, true and sound. Sadly a little proud of his tail today.

• PEARSON-: SUNSPRAKE CLOSE TO THE EDGE AT YESSANDI-: Mature boy built on a slightly bigger mould. Overall he presents a well constructed balanced picture. Great depth, correct bone and feet. Well put down in full coat. Moved out well round the ring. Just preferred head of winner.
• BENNETT-: GOLDBIRCH SWASHBUCKLER

MID LIMIT DOG-: (8) 7

• WOOD & WELLER-: JULDEANE PRIME SUSPECT (AI)-: Well presented mature orange. Liked him for his size and balance. Balanced head with lovely expression. Clean in neck, well laid shoulders, straight front. Nice depth to chest, ample heart room. Well ribbed up to well bent stifles, good depth of second thigh and well let down hocks. To complete the picture, level topline and. tail set. He moved out level and true with positive attitude using his tail. RCC.
• SYKES-: BUMBLECORN ROBIN AT DARAQUIST-: Very smart blue so balanced and another where everything flows. Neat head with the kindest of expressions. Correct bone and feet. He moved with verve using his tail. So well presented and shown. Close decision.

LIMIT DOG-: (6) 5

• LAWSON-: WANSLEYDALE DORIAN GRAY JW-: I have placed this striking tri before and have not changed my opinion of him. Love his head with the kindest of expressions. Clean reachy neck into correct lay of shoulder. He maybe slightly longer cast then some but he still presents a balanced picture standing on good bone and feet. Well bent stifles, nice short hocks, level topline and tail set. Shown in lovely coat and condition. Moves sound and true but I just wish he had more animation and drive.
• BISHOP-: DYRHAM DESERT STORM-: Attractive mature orange. Though his head is balanced and expression kind for me it is a little strong. However he has correct front assembly, is well ribbed up, good stifles and let down hocks. Correct bone and feet with level topline and tail set. He moved out soundly.
• RIDSDILL-: SHARNYX GLACIER ICE

• DARLEY-: SEVERNSETT FIRECRACKER-: Striking tri in beautiful coat and condition .Lovely balanced head with the darkest of eyes and true expression. So correct and balanced through out with no exaggerations. He moved soundly and well in the class but sadly in the challenge lacked motivation. Never the less a super dog.

Thank you to the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge at their show, I had a very enjoyable day awarding CCs for the first time and I think it an honour and a privilege to be asked to judge our lovely breed.   I would like to thank the Club for their outstanding hospitality and my two stewards for looking after both John and I and their efficient running of the ring. Finally, I would like to thank the exhibitors for giving me a lovely entry, both in numbers and quality.  The overall quality of bitches was excellent however, one area of concern for me is the increasing occurrence of light, round eyes.  This spoils the lovely gentle setter expression which is called for in the standard. Depth of chest was lacking in some exhibits.  It was disappointing that some bitches who looked the part when stacked disappointed on the move.  Finally, I was in complete agreement with my co-judge that the dog went BIS.

BITCHES

MPB (3,2) 1.  Gardner’s Mariglen Midnight Muse of Danwish, Pretty 8 mth light tri, still very raw.  She has a sweet, feminine head with lovely low set ears.  Excellent reach of neck into well laid back shoulders. Well sprung ribs and good level topline.  Moved well and held topline on the move.

PB (6,1) 1.  Buckley’s Fishwick Fortune Cookie, Really liked this 9 mth dark tri bitch attending her first show and giving her handler a bit of a hard time.  She presents such a balanced outline when standing, with good body proportions and oozes quality and substance.  Good head of correct proportions with low set ears.  Excellent front angulation and good reach of upper arm. Well off for bone and with cat light feet.  Good sweep of stifle, well let down hocks and short tail.  Moved well.  BPB & in agreement with my co-judge BPIS.  2.  Deville’s Fishwick Play it Cool, litter sister to my winner here.  Another lovely dark tri with good head and dark eye.  Long lean neck into well laid shoulders.  Well angulated front and rear. Moved well.  3.  Stephenson’s Mariglen Wave Dancer for Bondgate

VB (4,1)  1. McCabe’s Sh Ch Rachdale Elegance JW, Lovely substantial orange belton shown in hard condition and a worthy title holder.   She has a lovely feminine head and low set ears. Well ribbed up and level topline which she held on the moved.  Moved well. BVB & in agreement with my co judge BVIS.  2.  Ridsdill’s Tattersett Burnt Sugar at Sharnyx,  a short coupled, sweet headed orange with gentle expression and good reach of neck  She has good body proportions, excellent stifle, hocks well let down and with short tail.  Moved ok when settled.  3.  Kerr’s Ravensett Golden Charm

JB (3,1)  Liked different things about both these bitches  1. McDowell’s Moorbrook Miss Marple Avec Byedales, well balanced dbb with a lovely feminine head of correct proportions, dark eye and low set ears.  Well sprung ribs and good rear angulation with well let down hocks and short tail.  Sound, happy mover which won her the class.  2.  Howarth’s Moorbrook Owdid Thatappen, substantial dbb bitch shown in good coat.  Short coupled, well sprung ribs and level topline.  Needs to settle on the move.

YB (5,3) Two nice bitches in this class. 1.  Dykes’ Caleydene Comet,  Very elegant, feminine ob bitch shown in good coat.  She has a lovely head with low set ears and excellent reach of neck.  Short coupled with good front and rear angulation and well ribbed up.  Level topline held on the move.  Moved with style.  2.  Beasley’s Wansleydale Mayflower, pretty, short coupled bb bitch with good head, low set ears and dark eye giving gentle setter expression.  Lean arched neck into well placed shoulders.  Plenty of substance and good spring of rib.  Moved well.

PGB (3,1)  1.  Wale’s Chanina Golden Rose,  Beautifully balanced glamorous ob bitch shown in full coat.   Gorgeous head with correct proportions, well bodied with good spring of rib and well off for bone.  Straight front with good bone and tight, cat feet.  Moved well.  2.  Tompsett’s Leilasett Northern Lights over Radbrooks, Another nice orange bitch just lacking in finish today.   She is balanced, short coupled with well placed shoulders.  Good head with low set ears.  Moved nicely.

MLB (7,2)   1.  Watkin’s Valsett Starlite Night Sky, Very elegant, eye catching, light bb bitch shown in good coat and condition.  She has feminine head, lovely front and rear angulation, long reach of neck into well placed shoulders and is well off for bone.  Moved well.  2.  Dykes’ Wansleydale Bedazzled of Caleydene, Feminine, substantial tri bitch and dam of my Yearling winner.  Presents a very balanced picture with good topline and well off for bone.  In good coat and condition.  Moved well.  3.  Deville’s Kanietter Delphina

LB (12,4)  1,  Taylor’s Wansleydale Bizzie Bee, Loved this dark tri bitch.   She has all the elements I look for with elegance, a beautiful feminine head and dark eye, giving that gorgeous gentle setter expression.  Beautifully balanced with excellent angulation front and rear.  She has a long reach of neck, well placed shoulders and is well ribbed up.  Moved with style with slashing tail movement.  CC & RBIS.  2.  Paton’s Bournehouse Secret Destiny for Meadowfoot,  gorgeous headed ob bitch with lovely dark eye.  Shown in full coat and in gleaming condition.   She has good substance, is short coupled and beautifully balanced .  Well angulated front and rear with good body proportions and well sprung rib.   Moved well.   3.  Williams’ Bournehouse Night Sky 

OB (8,2) I have to say this class gave me a bit of a headache wish I had more red cards.

1. Buckley’s Sh Ch Tattersett Cool Roxy at Fishwick, Beautifully balanced, compact ob bitch full of quality and substance. Typical gentle setter expression with that dark eye.  Excellent body proportions. Level topline and correct tailset and well let down hocks.   Not surprised to discover she is the dam of my PB winner they have many similar qualities.   Won the class with her driving movement covering the ground with ease .  RCC.  2.  Dennis’  Sh Ch Mariglen  Ice Cold In Alex JW, another lovely ob bitch and worthy champion.  Different type to my winner.  Beautifully balanced with no exaggerations, elegant in outline, well off for bone.  3.  Rumble’s Jotunheim Ooh La La.

SBB (4,1)  1.  Welburn’s Oshowa Dream Come True, Feminine dark bb compact, short coupled bitch with feminine head and lovely dark eye.  Moved well.  2.  Welburn’s Culverwell Sea Breeze at Oshowa, Lighter bb balanced bitch, plenty of substance and well ribbed up.

I was honoured to be asked to judge dogs at the society’s 40th anniversary show; my entry was very good, in the current climate, so thank you to the exhibitors for coming.

Minor Puppy Dog (2)

1st Taylor’s Wansleydale Maybee, dark blue, 8 months old, well off for bone. I liked his head and expression, dark eyes, correct length of neck, good front, shoulders set back, good bend of stifle. Moved soundly with a level tail carriage.

2nd Fisher’s Quensha Man in the Mirror, 7 month old Orange Belton, correct shape head, dark eyes, level topline, decent angles throughout and moved soundly, just not as together as the winner, but another promising youngster.

Puppy Dog (6,1)

1st Stewart & Quenby’s Tattersett Golden Sunrise, 11 months old, Orange Belton, upstanding, masculine youngster, mature in coat and body, head has good proportions, dark eyes, true in front, shoulders set back, level topline, ribs are well sprung. Best Puppy Dog and BPIS

1st Vallance & Callander’s Ennydloc Yorkshire Elite to Rowanmyle, 7 year old Orange Belton. Upstanding boy, good head shape, straight in forearm, long neck, level topline, tailset as it should be, moved with drive and style.

2nd Johnston’s Daraquist Billy Bong, 9 year old Blue Belton, lovely type, correct head shape, dark eyes, level topline, good angles throughout and moved soundly, just not in the condition of my winner.

Junior (3,1)

1st Tucker’s Mariglen Nightwish for Walshaw, 13 month old Blue Belton, giving his handler a hard time but once settled he showed himself off well. Correct head shape, strong neck, level topline. Correct rear angulation, moved soundly.

2nd Taylor’s Kanietter Kocoa, 12 months old Tri colour, gave his handler a hard time. Masculine youngster, in very good coat and condition. His head proportions are good, straight front, strong neck, level topline, his rear end is correct and he has potential to be a striking dog, but needs time and a lot of training to get it together

1st Hepburn’s Tattersett Rainbow Legacy, 23 month old Orange Belton, in good coat and condition, strong bone, moderate angulation throughout, level topline, correct head proportions, would prefer a darker eye.

1st Wood’s Juldeane Prime Suspect (AI), really liked this young dog, he has so much style and presence. Good strong bone. Correct head proportions, dark eye, straight front, decent length of neck, deep chest, level topline, well muscled hindquarters. Moved well, extremely accurate footfall. Superbly handled, which got the best out of this boy. Res CC

1st Watts’ Walshaw Brushstrokes, dark tri, stylish and elegant in outline. Lovely, correct head and expression, dark eye. He is balanced with a good length of neck, level topline. Straight in front, good spring of rib, strong hindquarters with correct bend of stifle. In fantastic coat and condition. On the stack he was my CC winner, but he let his handler down on the move, he just would not put in the effort and that was disappointing, however, he did enough to win the class and he is still young, so once he gets his act together, he’ll definitely win the green cards.

2nd Sykes’ Bumblecorn Robin at Daraquist, Blue Belton, short coupled boy, lovely type. Correct head shape, dark eye, good bone, straight front, good length of neck, level topline, good spring of rib, sound movement

3rd Wilson’s Ravensett Giovanni

Mid Limit (4,3)

1st Darley’s Severnsett Firecracker, lovely young dog with a correct head, dark eye and soft expression, good length of neck, well placed shoulders, level topline, maturing well in body, nice spring of ribs, moved well. Well handled.

Limit (9,2)

1st Owen’s Cornsett You My Everything, orange belton, I judged him when he was a baby, loved him then and i am pleased to see he is developing well. Correct head shape, dark eye, soft expression, strong bone, straight front, good length of neck, good spring of rib, correct rear angulation, strong sound moving dog but he doesn’t help himself, on the stack he leans back, spoiling his topline and he gives his handler a really hard time, which is a shame, because he has it all there. I could see his true shape on the move and freestanding, which earned him the class.

2nd Lawson’s Wansleydale Dorian Grey JW, triclour, correct head proportions, dark eye and soft expression. Straight front, level topline. Moves soundly but I would like more ring presence, as I don’t think he gave his all, which is a pity.

3rd Harris & Hoeksema’s Bridgella’s First Edition with Konakakela JW ShCEx OSW

Open (9,3)

1st Danks-Kemish, Sh Ch Ravensett Work of Art at Alolfrana JW, mature Orange Belton, nice type, correct head with a dark eye and lovely, kind expression. Deep chest, good spring of rib, level topline, strong rear movement with good rear angulation. His movement is sound with good reach and full of style, with a correct slashing tail. Personally I would like a little more height but he is balanced and is a worthy Show Champion. CC and Res BIS

2nd Loynd’s Sh Ch Crimbledale Sea the Skies JW ShCM, similar remarks apply to this Blue Belton, just preferred the front of my winner, but this boy has so many positive attributes. His head and eye are correct, level topline and very strong rear which helps him power around the ring. A worthy Sh Ch.

The Midland English Setter Society 40th anniversary championship show was held on February 6th the KC Building, Stoneleigh Park, Warks. There were 167 entries from 110 exhibits. My fellow judge and I agreed on all of the major awards. Best in Show was the bitch CC winner, Dennis, Harris & Morgan’s Sh Ch Ice Cold In Alex At Mariglen. JW. Reserve BIS was the dog Danks-Kemish’s Sh Ch Ravensett Work Of Art At Alolfrana JW; Best Puppy the dog, Stewart & Quenby’s Tattersett Golden Sunrise and Best Veteran the bitch Taylor & Atyeo’s Samelen Golden Taffeta.
I was very honoured to be invited to judge the bitches at this very important show in the history of the society. Organisation on the day was second to none and there were lovely rosettes, special prize cards and lots of presents for the dogs on offer in each class. I would like to thank my two very efficient stewards and also the exhibitors for the lovely entry, for creating a friendly atmosphere and being accepting of my placings. The dogs were presented in excellent condition, temperaments were superb and my only comment would be the lack of front angulation in some of the exhibits in the later classes.

1 Bott, Allen & Morgan’s Quensha’s Sky Full of Stars. Best head & outline in this class. Nicely balanced throughout. Good length of neck; well balanced head with sufficient depth of muzzle. Excellent bone & spring of rib. Nicely developed over loin for age. Well let down hocks. Movement a little erratic due to enthusiasm but sound.
2 Taylor’s Wansleydale Mayfly. Pretty head but not quite the muzzle of 1. Well angulated throughout. Good bone, depth of chest & well let down hocks. Neat feet. Correct topline. Moved well with the correct slashing tail action.
3 Beasley’s Wansleydale Mayflower.

1 Seaman’s Mariglen Indigo. Very feminine in outline. Nice short length of back and good width of loin for age. Lovely feminine head, eye & expression; large open nose. Good length of neck; excellent depth of chest & spring of rib. Good bone. Good width of upper & lower thigh and well let down hocks. Nice coat texture. Moved soundly fore & aft.
2 Grimsdell’s Tattersett Dark Amber. Out of a larger mould. Well-proportioned head and nice angulation throughout. Good spring of rib, a little long in loin. Good width of upper & lower thigh. Moved covering the ground well on neat feet.
3 Duke’s Caleydene Connextion

Veteran B 7,3 First & second were lovely examples of the breed.
1 Taylor & Atyeo’s Samelen Golden Taffeta. Best Veteran. Most feminine in outline & head and caught my eye entering the ring as she moved like a dream, really flowing around the ring. Lovely eye & expression, correct shape of skull & muzzle. Excellent angulation fore & aft. Good width of upper & lower thigh. Excellent spring of rib & depth of chest. Good topline and tailset. Moved soundly & typically. Shown in well-muscled condition.
2 Seaman’s Ch Mariglen Mercedes JW. Another lovely bitch and so nice to go over. Has all the essentials. Nicely balanced head & coat of excellent quality. Quality bone; well let down hocks. Moved soundly on good well-padded feet.
3 Aldridge’s Grakar Strarstruck At Fleckers

1 McLoughlin’s Arabin Silver Panda. Won on overall typical outline. Lovely coat & good bone. Nicely balanced head, good skull shape & earset. Sufficient length of neck; correct angulation fore & aft. Excellent spring of rib; good width of upper & lower thigh and well let down hocks. Would just prefer a darker eye colour. Excellent on the move, really covering the ground well and moving soundly infront and behind.
2 Dennis’s Mariglen Unwrapped. Another lovely feminine bitch just not quite as mature as 1. Lovely eye & expression; large open nose. Excellent front & rear angulation. Nice width of upper & lower thigh. Good bone and nice tight feet. Shown in excellent well-muscled condition. Moved soundly both coming and going.

Good muzzle of sufficient length and strength, nice earset, eye & expression. Large open nose. Good bone & angulation fore & aft. Excellent spring of rib. Neat, well-padded feet. Nice tailset & slashing tail action on the move. Excellent coat quality.
2 Mugford’s Aldfrana Sugar’n’Spice At Lynwood JW. Another nicely constructed bitch, just not quite the movement of 1. Feminine head, eye & expression. Good front & rear angulation. Well let down hocks. Nice topline & spring of rib. A little lacking in feathering on the day.
3 Owen’s Beechanger Isabelina At Cornsett

1 Tucker’s Walshaw Save The Last Dance. Nice size & outline & shown in good muscular condition. Feminine, well-balanced head with lots of work in it. Nice intelligent expression and large open nose. Good bone, excellent spring of rib. Well-angulated hindquarters with well let down hocks. Moved soundly fore & aft. Quality coat texture.
2 Beasley’s Wansleydale Amaretto. Another nice example not quite the movement of 1 but nicely balanced in skull to muzzle. Good set-on of ears. Pleasing length & strength of neck. Nice bone & feet. Excellent spring of rib with ribcage going well back to strong loin.
3 Duke’s Wansleydale Bedazzled At Caleydene

A little short of furnishings but overall presented a lovely picture.
2 Trigwell’s Hannahdene Ruby Tuesday. Well-constructed throughout not quite as mature as 1. Nice front angulation & well-muscled. Good bone & feet. Feminine head with nice eye & expression. Moved soundly when settled.

Nice eye colour & shape. Good length & strength of neck. Excellent front & rear angulation. Well-muscled throughout. Nice bone & feet. Excellent depth of chest & spring of rib with ribcage going well back to wide, strong loin. Well let down hocks. Moved soundly both coming and going with correct slashing tail action.
2 Grimsdell’s Tattersett Clever Cookie. Another lovely bitch. Nicely balanced in head with large open nose. Nice earset; Lovely eye & expression. Excellent spring of rib; correct topline & tailset. Good width of upper & lower thigh. Moved well really covering the ground with lovely tail action.

3rd- Arkley’s –  Hartsett Last Waltz

1^st – Arkley’s – Hartsett Flash Dance – Nice strong dog coming to his best now. Correct proportioned head with lovely expression set on a good neck.  Nice withers excellent topline and one the best tail sets, a good coat correct bone and good feet all contribute to give a very pleasing outline.  Moved well so I was delighted to award him his first CC, I am sure more will come.  Best in Show

2^nd – Hopper’s – Bramstorm Forest Sprite – Finer dog, well angulated fore and aft.  good forearm and stifle.

3rd-Leather’s- Back to Black De Los Vitorones (Imp Esp)

BITCHES

My thanks to the Officers and Committee for the kind invitation.  Due to the good weather conditions it was a pleasure to judge the dogs outside in good sized rings.  A good atmosphere seemed to prevail throughout the show. 

Minor Puppy (4,1)  A nice class of young ladies.  1^st Kelly’s Richecca The Snow Queen.  A super orange belton bitch shown in good coat and well presented.  Decent head, good reach of neck,  excellent layback of shoulder, well ribbed and strong body properties.  Short coupled and strong back end.  Moved well but carried her tail a little high at times.  2^nd Wale’s Chanina Golden Rose.  Another quality bitch, pleasing head and dark kind eye.  Good shoulders and body properties.  Not quite so collected on the move as the winner.  However I am sure these two will swap places throughout their careers. 

Puppy (2,1) 1^st Hutchinson’s Monaysbridge Iris.  A light blue belton bitch who has a pleasing outline.  Good neck and shoulders, strong body properties although she could be shorter in the couplings, decent bone, good angulation, moved and showed well. 

Veteran (5,1) 1^st Stephenson’s Lakecastle Kasumi at Wistaston.  A 7 year old tricolour bitch of lovely type.  A very pleasing head, sweet dark eye and expression, good legs, bone and feet.  Well bodied, good bend of stifle and moved very well.  She is a credit to her owners.  2^nd Hartle and Stone’s Hartsett All My Lovin.  Orange bitch, pleasing in many respects.  Decent head, a little small in eye, correct neck and layback of shoulder, longer cast than winner but moved well.  Well handled.  

Junior (No entries)

Yearling (5,2) 1^st Watkin’s Valsett Starlite Night Sky.  A light blue belton bitch with a very typical and pleasing outline.  Correct head and eye, good front assembly with correct length of leg, well ribbed, short coupled and moved well. Good legs, bone and feet.   Pleased to award her the Bitch CC. 2^nd Whiting and Grant’s Tattersett Frankel’s Storm at Ormstiga. Orange bitch with good outline, feminine head, not as well boned as the winner, would like her to move with more width behind. 

Maiden (1,0) 1^st Grimsdell, Stuart and Quenby’s Tattersett Rainswept.  Rather narrow in front and longer in body than ideal.  Shown in good coat. 

Novice (5,1)1^st Watkin’s Valsett Starlite Night Sky.  2^nd Watts and Leather’s Pewterspeare Pirouette.  Orange bitch, a little overawed at being examined but moved very well with vigour and drive.  A little broad in skull, dark eye, correct bone, well sprung ribs, good body properties and strong hindquarters.  Correct tail set and carriage. 

Tyro (1,0) 1^st Watkin’s Valsett Starlite Night Sky. 

Undergraduate (No Entries)

Graduate (5,0) 1^st Hutchinson’s Mariglen Xara at Monaysbridge.  Orange bitch with pleasing outline.  A little small in eye but typical head, good neck and shoulders, well ribbed, good hindquarters, moved well.  2^nd  Dykes’ Wansleydale Bedazzled at Caleydene.  Tricolour bitch not quite at one with her handler, a little short in foreface, good neck and shoulders, well boned, moved quite close behind. 

Post Graduate (8,3) 1^st Stubbington and Buckley’s Tattersett Cool Roxy.  Orange bitch of pleasing type, feminine head with dark eye and kind expression.  Correct front assembly, well boned, short coupled with big spring of rib.  Moved well with correct tail carriage.  If she had moved with more enthusiasm she could have secured a higher award.  2^nd Ridsdill’s Sharnyx Esmerelda.  A substantial orange bitch, longer cast than the winner but still of good quality.  Pleasing head and dark eye, well ribbed, moved well. 

Mid-Limit Bitch (3,0) 1^st Grimsdell Tattersett Lucerne.  3 year old blue belton bitch with a very pleasing outline, good length of leg, excels in neck and shoulder placement.  A pleasant head and eye, very feminine, moved well holding a correct topline.  Pleased to award her the Reserve CC.  2^nd Bishop’s Sorbus Plays the Fool at Dyrham.  Tricolour bitch of nice type with good outline.  Lacked a little finish to her foreface.  Good neck and shoulders, correct legs, bone and feet, short coupled, moved well. 

Limit (6,3) 1^st Kelly’s Richecca Chorus Girl.  Orange bitch, very feminine, well presented.  Good length of leg gave her a super outline.  Good bone, big ribs, short coupled, moved well.  2^nd Bryant and Hollis’ Phenset Sparks Will Fly.  Appealing head and dark eye, good neck and shoulder placement.  Longer in loin than winner, moved well. 

Open (4,2) 1^st Watkin’s Valsett Starlite Indigo Sky.  Blue bitch of good type, feminine head and kind eye, well boned, good neck and shoulders, deep body, well sprung ribs, moved well, shown in good coat.  2^nd  Jarvis’ Ir Sh Ch Hawklawn Summer Breeze.  Appealing dark tricolour, slightly longer in loin than winner, moved well. 

Special Beginniners (1,0) 1st Beasley’s Wansleydale Amaretto.  4 year old tricolour bitch, well boned, feminine head and kind eye, good neck and shoulders, correct hindquarters moved well with correct tail carriage.

17 months orange bitch. Another promising youngster.  

Well made head, sweet eye & expression, good stop

& chiselling below eye. Clean throat, Neat neck & forehand,

ribcage still developing,  Good turn of hindquarters.  Moved

well in profile.

Strong loin & croup. Excellent turn of hindquarters, Moved well

with a powerful drive.

I was in complete agreement with my co judge, when it came to making the final decisions.

1st Silvamoon Storm Trooper for Phenset, flashy dark tri, pleasing head and kind expression , long lean neck, set into well placed shoulders,  strong bone and well bodied, moved well keeping a level top line and lashing his well set tail. I will watch his future with interest.

2nd Mortimer Phlerdor Heart of the Storm, 7 month old orange, not as together as winner, but lots to like about him, masculine head, nicely made throughout, moved soundly wagging his well set tail.

1st Bailey’s Ravensett Seville at Gwithian, Mature eyecatching dark orange, 11 months, quality head with kind dark eyes, clean neck, well laid shoulders, good front and rear angulation, well balanced throughout, moved soundly with style, lashing his well set tail. Pleased to award him Best Puppy Dog.
2nd Banks-Kemish Samelen GI Blues at Alolfrana Blue dog, another nice puppy, not as mature as 1, long lean neck, set into well placed shoulders. Shown in good coat, just needs to settle on the move.

What a lovely class of oldies.
1st Colton’s Sodalitas High Havoc over Ennydloc, 8 year old who is an old favourite of mine, his tail wagged all day, he is always so happy and at one with his owner,  kind gentle expression, dark expressive eyes, low set ears, well set shoulders,  strong bone, firm topline, shown in hard condition, moved with drive using his tail to advantage. BVIS in full agreement of my Co-judge.

2nd Trigwell ‘s Hannahdene Status Quo another super oldie enjoying his day out, not showing his  10 years at all,  low set ears, good length of neck, well placed shoulders, firm topline which he kept on the move, well angulated fore and aft.

3rd  Hutchinson’s Mariglen  Dancing Brave over Monaysbridge

This class was full of quality.
1st Normansell ‘s Latin Lover Rewind For Larrenie (Imp ITA), Lovely youngster, who has won under me in the past, dark blue flashy dog, masculine head, expressive eyes, elegant  but masculine throughout, long lean neck, set into correctly placed shoulders, deep brisket, good angulation fore and aft, good tight feet, shown in hard condition, moved with drive using his correctly set tail to advantage.

2nd Pointer & Lewis’ Quensha Cowboys and Angels, Stunning orange unfortunately seemed a bit flat today, but he still gave the winner a run for his money. Loved his head, melting expression, dark eyes, low set ears, clean neck, set into well placed shoulders, good depth of chest, body proportions and well boned. Shown in hard condition and good quality of coat.
3rd Phillips, Bryant’s & Watkin’s Glenmaurangi Star Man

1st Taylor’s Wansleydale Quicksilver, what a lovely youngester, eyecatching  tri, long lean head, melting expression, good length of neck,well laid shoulders and sprung ribs, deep chest and short in the loin, covered the ground easily driving well from his well muscled quarters. As always from this kennel presented in first class condition.

1st Butler’s Wansleydale Goldsmith, I couldn’t take my eyes off him, What a Stunning youngster, my star of the day, flashy orange with a dark eye patch, he oozes quality and breed type, I just loved his head and melting expression, dark expressive eyes, clean elegant reach of neck, well laid shoulders, straight front, well ribbed, good bend of stifle, well let down hocks, good width of loin, on the move he is so sound and true. Thrilled to award him his first CC, I am sure the first of many – well done.
2nd Young’s Wansleydale Ace of Hearts over Ingella another stunner from this kennel, so sound and honest, beautiful shaped head, soft expression, kind eyes, clean neck flowing into correct shoulders, well bodied, good turn of stifle and second thigh, hocks well let down, sound movement driving from the rear.
3rd Jennings-Sharman and Sharman Canteris Cool for Catz JW

1st King’s Dobbies Delight at Grantastar This dog was a new one to me he is of old fashioned type, so sound and honest, handler needs to gain a bit more confidence to show this lovely dog off to his best, no exaggerations just flowing lines, well proportioned head, kind expression and dark eyes, good body proportions, shown in good coat, on  the move he moved with style and drive, he pushed hard for top honours.

2nd Tattersett Galileo similar type to winner, same remarks apply, pushed winner hard unfortunately just lacking a bit of sparkle today, nicely made, very sound lots to like about him. Lovely head and expression, sound true mover.

3rd Weller’s Hannahdene Rhapsody in Blue

Open (6) Wow what a class – 6 Show Champions – on a different day each one could have won:

1st Thompson’s Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd JW ShCM this was just a tough class to judge, this dog is a favourite of mine, recently gained his title, he’s a worthy Sh Ch, he commands attention, he took my eye as he entered the ring. Balanced head of good shape, loved his expressions, super front, well bodied, good turn if stifle, good feet, hocks well let down, in the class moved well with great forward reach, unfortunately in the challenge lacked sparkle if the CC winner  – but that’s splitting hairs, shown in hard condition RCC.

2nd Littlechild’s Ravensett Fire Nice JW, This dogs moves like a dream,
sound ground covering movement,  as always from this kennel, presentation is first class, he looked stunning. Loved his head and expression, He is balanced throughout, built on clean flowing  lines, no exaggerations scores in confirmation, worthy Sh Ch.

Delightful 6 month old dark tri baby. So completely balanced for her tender age. Extremely pretty and well put together. She has such ring presence already and never put a foot wrong all day. Delighted to see her go BPIS.

1. Montell’s Culverwell Sweet Arrival

7 month attractive tri. Further on in her development than 1, with the beginnings of a big quality coat. Compact body, well boned, moved and showed well. Should have a bright future.

Quality tricolour with classic head, super forehand and strong level topline. Very well balanced. Moved very soundly with ‘panache’.

A great favourite of mine. A picture when stacked, so elegant and refined. Retains a beautiful head and dark eye. Love her overall shape and type. Coat in excellent condition. Not quite as positive on the move as 1.

Very elegant and well presented orange. Built on finer lines. Loved her head and expression. Pleasing overall make and shape. Gave her handler a hard time. Sound happy mover.

1. Cook’s Bridgella’s Sophie Loren at Pernickety

Compact orange of pleasing type. Short coupled and well bodied. Good shoulder placement and level topline. Sound (and naughty!) on the move. Liked her very much.

Really liked this pretty orange girl. Lovely type. Good shoulders and front assembly. Beautiful head with deep orange mask. Correct topline and tailset. Well presented. Moved ok.

Dark blue with a pretty head. Short coupled body, well angulated hindquarters. Short hocks and neat feet. Coat a little on the blow. Moved happily.

1. Hartle’s Hartsett Lady in Grey

Elegant dark tri. Feminine head. Neat front. Short coupled. Well balanced throughout. Moved and showed really well for her young handler. In tip top condition.

1. White’s Niddbeck Scarlet Lady at Paduan

Substantial orange of different type. Stronger in head than 1. Low set ears and soft expression. Good forehand and level topline. Moved steadily. More attention needed to presentation.

1. Bryant and Hollis Phenset Sparks Will Fly JW

Exuberant dark blue, giving her handler a hard time. Nicely made and moved really well once settled. Most beautiful head and eye. Will do well once fully mature. One for the future.

1. Tompsett’s Bushbane Celtic Heartbeat of Radbrooks

Glamorous orange with lovely head and dark eye.  Strong bone, well angulated. Short hocks. Longer in loin than I prefer. Moved well but slightly proud of her tail today. In lovely coat and condition.

Stunning orange in full coat, so elegant and refined. Love her head and eye. Long elegant neck and neat front with good lay of shoulder, well balanced throughout. Strong rear, level topline and tail set on correctly. Moved with style and purpose. Must have a bright future.

1. Dennis’ Mariglen Sweet Pea

Another very nice orange of a different type. Excellent front assembly and strong loin. Well balanced. Neat feet. Moved really well with enthusiasm. Shame she just wasn’t co-operating with her handler today.

Very pretty light tri, with appealing feminine head, clean over neck and shoulders. Well balanced fore and aft. Deep chest. Moved really well to win this class. Perfectly presented and handled.

1. Tucker’s Niddbeck Smokey Opal at Walshaw’s

Dark tri of different type. Stronger in head but still feminine and appealing. Well made bitch that moved soundly with panache and enthusiasm on a loose lead. Loved her attitude. Not quite the finish of 1 but pushed hard.

Super elegant orange with most exquisite head and dark eye and soft expression. Long reach of neck and well laid shoulders. Deep chest. Well angulated rear and strong hocks. Moved with animation. Handled to advantage.

Another cracking bitch from this kennel. Elegant yet with substance. Excellent forehand construction. Well balanced all through. In lovely coat and condition. Moved well but a tad erratic at times.

I have admired this bitch from the ringside and today she did not disappoint. Stunning head, expressive eye, long neck and correct forehand. Well ribbed and short coupled. Balanced both stacked and on the move. In glorious coat and condition. Fabulous!! CC and BIS.

1. Taylor’s Weatherby Whisper to Wansleydale

Another of my favourites, so unlucky to meet 1 in such good form. Dark tri with sweetest of heads, compact and balanced construction. So feminine and appealing in everyway. In gleaming condition  and so well handled and presented as always. Moved with style and purpose.

1. Seaman’s Mariglen Mercedes

1. Bozier’s Victoriaview Hollyhock

Eyecatching orange, placed 4th in junior. Really liked this one. With more confidence should do well. Loved her head and expression. Correct front assembly. Well off for bone. Deep chest. Short hocks. Moved ok with lovely tail action.

1. Beasley’s Wansleydale Amaretto

Smart tri with attractive head. Nicely made. Presents a balanced outline. Sadly lacking coat and condition today but really promising. Moved well.

1st Grimsdell’s Tattersett Dark Honey
16 month feminine orange belton who presents a lovely outline when standing with everything in proportion. Attractive in head with dark well shaped eyes and soft expression. Clean neck of good length leading into well placed shoulders and return of upper arm. She has a straight front and stands on good legs and lovely tight feet. Well-developed body for age.  Moved out soundly holding her topline with correct tailset and carriage which won her this class.
2nd Wale’s Wansleydale Magic Rose JW
Pretty orange belton girl just coming up to 17 months. Sweet well-proportioned head with dark eye and appealing expression. Pleasing length of neck into well laid shoulders.   Well angulated front and hind quarters. Moved well and true but not the flair of the winner on the day. Well presented in good condition.

1st Thomson’s Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd JW ShCM
I last judged this dog as a puppy and pleased to see him today.  Quality blue belton of 4 years old presented in excellent condition.  He has a handsome head of balanced proportions with typical expressive eyes, low set ears. Good reach of neck into good lay of shoulder flowing into strong level topline. Nicely muscled and constructed hindquarters. Shown in full coat. Moved around the ring with good driving action.
2nd Stewart & Quenby’s Tattersett Galileo
Elegant 4 year old blue belton dog who presents a clean balanced outline on first glance. He has a handsome chiselled head with square muzzle and well defined stop.  Good through neck and shoulders, straight front with good spring of rib. Quarters are well made with good muscle tone. Moved out okay but not the drive of the winner today.

Eyecatching blue belton dog with a well-shaped masculine head with a hint of naughtiness in those dark eyes.  Good reach of neck into well-made forequarters.  Deep through the chest and well sprung ribs, strong over the loin. Moved out with good reach and drive with a lovely balanced profile. Presented in excellent coat and condition.
2nd Danks-Kemish SH CH Ravensett Jail House Rocks Alolfran JW ShCM
Well presented dog who combines elegance with masculinity.   Handsome head of good shape with dark eye and typical melting expression. Clean muscular neck with good shoulder placement and return of upper arm. Straight front, well sprung ribs and good turn of stifle. Moved steady and true on lovely neat feet.

MIDLAND ENGLISH SETTER SOCIETY CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW  4 FEB 2018

I would like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge dogs at  their Championship show and to my hard working stewards.  I had a thoroughly enjoyable day with some outstanding dogs.

On the whole I found the dogs to be of exceptional quality, but did find a number of low set tails some of which were carried high, straight in stifle, close rear action and untidy feet, but I am sure with time some can be breed out and attention paid to.  Presentation on the whole was excellent.

In total agreement with co-judge Keith Young for the final placings.

Lovely class of puppies. 1. Taylor’s Wansleydale Quicksilver.  Attractive 8 month old B/B/T, long lean head, dark eye, low set ears, strong in jaw, good length of neck leading correct shoulder placement, well bodied for age and good angulations fore and aft.  Firm topline.  Excellent bone, and beautiful tight feet, moved well for a youngster.  Excellent presentation.  RBPIS.  2. Harris’ Bridgella’s First Edition with Konakakela.  O/B of 7 months, good head proportions, dark eye, good length to muzzle, correct shoulder placement, well bodied, good angulations, moved well and good presentation.  3. Colton’s Sodalitas High Havoc over Ennydloc.  7 year old O/B, shown in good condition.  Good head proportions with dark eyes, low set ears, good length to neck, well placed shoulders, well bodied, good tail set, and neat feet.  Moved with drive with lashing tail.  2. Wood’s Swannery Magical Moment. 10 year old who didn’t show his age, attractive head proportions, dark eyes, low set ears, good length to neck, well placed shoulders, firm topline, and good sweep to stifle, correct tail set, moved out well.  3. Arkley’s Hartsett Flash Dance. 13 month O/B, has really come along since I last saw him from ringside. Dark masked dog, with good head proportions and dark eye, low set ears, good length of neck and well placed shoulders, firm topline and good tail set, moved out well.  3. Spencer’s Sorbus Plays The Field.

Brown’s Mariglen Night Manager.  Attractive 22 month old B/B/T, good head proportions, dark soft expressive eyes, good length to neck, well placed shoulders, firm topline, good tail set, well muscled, neat feet,  moved out with drive.  2. Oliver’s Bramstorm Oberon.  Happy 21 month old B/B, pleasing outline, good head and body proportions, moved well, would have preferred darker pigment.  3. Hopper’s Bramstorm Forest Sprite. 

MD. (2.1a). 1.  B. Forest Sprite.  Litter mate to 2nd in Yearling, who needs time and practice, not as forward. Presents a pleasing outline with lovely head and dark eye, well placed shoulders, good depth to brisket, and short coupled.  Movement can be improved on.

MID LD (7.1a) Good class, first two I have judged before and happy to see they didn’t disappoint.  1. Buckley’s Fishwick Cor Blimey.  O/B, Lovely head, kind expressive dark eyes, low set ears, deep chest, well placed shoulders, and good body proportions, well boned and neat feet, firm topline, moved with drive.  2. Martin’s Quensha Cast No Shadow over Sunhouse. Dark B/B/T, good head proportions with dark well shaped expressive eyes, low set ears, good depth to chest, and lay of shoulders, well off for bone with tight feet, firm topline with good sweep to stifle, not a positive on the move as 1st today.  3. Thomson’s Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd JW ShCM

Another lovely class.  1.Trigwell’s Hannahdene Rhapsody In Blue.  B/B, well presented, with lovely head and dark expressive eyes, low set ear, long in neck, good layback of shoulders, well boned and neat fee, firm topline, good sweep to stifle, moved out with lashing tail, just faded somewhat in the challenge.  2. Harradine’s Mandyset Leave It To Lewis at Halliana.  Lovely B/B/T, with good head proportions, dark expressive eyes, low set ears, good length of neck, well placed shoulders, firm topline, moved out well.  3. Cole’s Sorbus Storm Ryder JW

OD. (9.2a).  Stunning class of dogs and all were presented in excellent form.  1. Kelly’s Sh Ch Richecca Shades Of Grey JW.  Dog who I thought was special the first time I saw him as a youngster, and didn’t disappoint going over him.  B/B/T excels in head, with lovely dark melting expressive eyes, with the much sought after occipital protuberance, strong jaw, low set ears, long length to neck with good layback of shoulders, straight front, tight feet , deep chested, firm topline, correct tail set with he used to advantage on the move, which he did with drive. CC and thrilled he went BIS.  2. Collier’s Sh Ch Gamerights Mr Blue Sky at Roszarke (Imp Bel).  Another favourite of mine, B/B, balanced head, with soft expressive dark eyes, and a beautiful eye patch, long in neck and good shoulder placement, well boned and tight feet, good angulations fore and after, firm topline, moved with drive with lashing tail. 1. Arkley’s Hartsett Flash Dance. 13 months orange male, showing lots of promise. Strong, masculine head with dark eye and pigment. Well balanced with long neck into well laid shoulders. Short coupled. Moved soundly. In lovely coat and condition.

2. Bishop’s Sorbus Plays The Fool at Dyrham. 16 months pretty, tri coloured female, with dark eye and low set ears, giving a soft, gentle expression. Well put together, nicely angulated hindquarters. Moved well, with setter style, using her tail. Just needs coat.

1. Deering’s Skylark of Rosetimber. 3 yrs orange female. Everything to like about this quality female. Pretty, feminine head with dark eye giving a melting expression. Clean through neck and shoulders and lovely front assembly. Deep chest, short coupled, standing on neat feet Correct, accurate movement. Tail well set on, which she used on the move.

2. Pitts’ Wandsfell Call On Me. 19 months tri coloured male. Masculine head without coarseness, well worked for age, with kind, dark eye. Good bone and substance. Well laid shoulders and lovely topline, held on the move. Well sprung ribs, deep chest and short in the loin. Covers the ground with smooth, easy stride, driving from well muscled hind quarters.

3. Weller’s Ravensett Giselle at Juldeane

1. Grimsdell’s Sh.Ch. Gillancette Pebbles for Tattersett JW Orange female with feminine head, kind eye and gentle expression. Full of quality. Typical outline and sound construction, balanced throughout. Good front, well turned stifles. Steady on the move with lovely tail action, holding her topline. Good muscle on first and second thigh.

2. Bryant & Bryant & Hollis’ Sh.Ch. Phensett Blue Max. Classic, masculine head on this blue male. Dark eye and the most beautiful expression. Lovely reach of neck into good forehand assembly. Good depth of brisket and spring of rib. Covers the ground well in profile. In excellent coat and condition.

It was a privilege and pleasure to judge Dogs at this show, my thanks to the officers, committee and exhibitors .Having been a few years since I judged this breed at this level the dogs were on the whole new to me, many by reputation only. I felt the quality in the youngsters overall dogs and bitches bide well for the breed in the future. However a few observations did cause concern mainly feet, where have all the tight well arched toes gone. So many dogs having flat spoon shaped feet not typical of the breed and not fit for purpose, nails too long which does not help, also many dogs lacked depth through second thigh to complete the picture .I was in complete agreement with my fellow judge that her best bitch went BIS, fabulous bitch who just owned the big ring. My dog went reserve BIS, my veteran BVIS and my puppy RPIS.

1st-: Olivers-: BRAMSTORM OBERON-: Lovely youngster who filled the eye with his balance and angles. Head of correct planes, kind expression, into good reach of neck. Super bone and feet, level topline. Moved out well.
2nd-: Watkins-: VALSETT STARLITE ROMANCER-: Similar remarks apply to this quality dark blue. Moved out well once settled, not as tight in front as one. I predict a bright future for these two youngsters.

Stands proud over his ground correct from any angle,such a kind gentle expression. On the move he showed many a younger dog how to go striding out head up tail slashing.BVIS.
2nd-: Trigwells-: HANNAHDENE STATUS QUO-: A quality tri dog, presenting a balanced outline on good bone and feet. Moving he strode out, tail never stopped, in very good condition.
3rd-: Jolleys-: SH CH WANSLEYDALE LOGANBERRY AT JOLYMORE shCM

1st-: Youngs-: WANSLEYDALE ACE OF HEARTS OVER INGELLA-: What a star in the making, oozes quality and breed type. Standing he presents such a clean balanced outline with no exaggeration. Beautifully moulded head with lovely expression into clean neck flowing to correct shoulders, straight front, best of bone and feet .Level topline, well turned stifles, good depth through second thigh, well let down hocks. Sound mover on a long stride, tail slashing .One I could take home. RCC.
2nd-: Jennings-: CANTERIS COOL FOR CATZ-: Another out of the top drawer, this super quality blue was giving away four months to my winner. Super body for age, correct angles, again no exaggerations just flowing lines. He has a well proportioned head with lovely dark expressive eyes, clean reachy neck, correct bone and feet. His movement was a joy he travels with reach and drive, very precise and true, tail slashing. Lovely young dog with so much to come.

1st-: Pearsons-: BRADSTAR TOTAL ECLIPSE AT YESSANDI-: Showy orange with a lovely head and expression. True in front well ribbed up to well bent stifles. Good topline and tail set. Once settled with change of handler he moved out well with slashing tail.
2nd-: Sketchleys-: WANSLEYDALE FRAZER-: This young man needs to be gone over to appreciate fully. He has excellent conformation all through from his straight front to well let down hocks. On the move he comes into his own, so sound and true, plenty of reach and drive. Just needs to relax more on the stack to show his virtues off.
3rd-: Tompsetts-: RADBROOKS SLOOP JOHNB

1st-: Darleys-: SEVERNSETT HEARTBREAKER-: Giving a lot away in the junior class, this young tri has all the essentials. Head still needs to break more, which will come. Overall his conformation pleased and he moved out freely, just needs time.

1st-: Atyeos-: SAMELEN HARRIS TWEED-: Well made orange, with good head and expression. Well developed body good depth and length. Level topline and correct tail set. Sound and happy on the move, using tail.

2nd-: Saunders-: SHANANDI FLAMING SURPRISE-: Close up to winner another lovely quality orange. Super clean lines same remarks apply. His movement again was so sound and positive, beautifully turned out.

1st-: Mitchell, Withey & Cravos-: SORBUS BELFRY LAD-: Loved the head and expression on this young dog. Very balanced outline, good bone and feet, good topline and tail set. Still needs to mature more to finish the picture. Free sound mover.
2nd-: Mellishs-: WALSHAW BLINDED BY LOVE FOR MONBREC-: Nicely made blue, lot to like. Sound mover, coat not at its best today.

1st-: Wellers-: HANNAHDENE DANNY BOY WITH JULDEANE JW-:Very taken with this orange boy. Lovely balanced head with super expression. He stands so balanced on good bone and feet, clean flowing lines, no exaggerations. In this class moved out well, with drive and purpose but later in the challenge lacked positivity, close up for top honours.
2nd-: Wale & Baileys-: WANSLEYDALE KINGS MAGIC JW-: Quality orange who displayed a master class in presentation, he looked stunning. He scores in conformation, another with balance all through, fills the eye. Sound on the move but for me lacked the sparkle of one and just preferred head of winner.
3rd-: Sykes-: DARAQUIST BARRY A REEF JW

1st-: Colliers-: SH CH GAMERIGHTS MR BLUE SKY AT ROSZARKE ( IMP BEL)-: This dog took my eye from the minute he entered the ring. He has that ‘look at me’ quality which I always hope to find. Super shaped head so balanced, clean cut into elegant reach of neck, clean well laid shoulders. Straight front, well ribbed up, good bend of stifle, well let down hocks. His topline flows into well set on tail with good width to loin. He moved out sound and true using his tail, loved him. Still a young dog feel there is more to come. CC. RBIS.
2nd-: Kellys-: SH CH RICHECCA SHADES OF GREY JW-: A very worthy champion who it was a privilege to go over. He stands over his ground like he owns it. Beautifully balanced head and lovely true expression. His conformation and sound movement stands testament to his huge success. Today I felt the two younger dogs had more sparkle and performance. A truly lovely boy.

1st Jenning’s Canteris Cool For Catz – 14 month b/b dog with a handsome well-shaped head and beautiful soft expressive eyes. He has a reachy neck with well-placed shoulders and return of upper arm. Lovely straight front with good depth of chest. Well ribbed and proportioned body. Firm level topline, which he held on the move. Strong rear end with correctly set on tail. Good bone and tight feet. Happy sound mover, when he concentrated between the jumps!! Overall a young elegant dog, yet with good substance.

2nd Weller’s Ravensett Giselle At Juldeane – A very promising 9 month old o/b bitch puppy with a sweet well-proportioned head with oval eyes of good colour. Ample length of neck with good layback of shoulder. Just needs to tighten a tad in front. Well sprung ribs for age and good tail carriage. Well-developed hindquarters and another with good bone and feet. Close decision between the two, but felt the dog had the better front and the edge on movement.

1st Taylor’s Wansleydale Queen Bee – A quality 3 year old b/b bitch of lovely type with a feminine shapely head of good proportions with typical expressive eyes. Pleasing length of neck with good shoulder placement and length of upperarm. Straight front with good length and depth of body. Firm level topline. Strong rear end with correct turn of stifle. Tail well set, used well on the move. Tight feet. An elegant bitch with a nicely balanced profile, moved out with style and drive.

2nd Mugford’s Quensha Summer Nights At Lynwood JW – A 4 year old o/b bitch who was so well balanced and not overdone in any way. Feminine well-proportioned head with kind eyes. Good reach of neck, well laid shoulders. Strong level topline and well ribbed body. Muscular quarters. Good bone and tight feet. Well-presented and handled.

1st Dennis & Roffey’s SH CH Mariglen Xanthe JW – An eye catching o/b bitch on the stance and on the move. Beautiful moulded head, full of breed type which she held high on the move. Arched neck of good length, well angulated shoulders and tight elbows. Straight forechest and firm level topline. Well sprung ribs, correct tailset with slashing tail. Strong well-muscled quarters. Well off for bone and tight feet. Best mover of the day, flowed around the ring with a free and easy stride.

2nd Lawson’s SH CH Mariglen Ice Crystal JW SHCM – A well balanced b/b bitch with a feminine head and well-shaped oval eye. Clean muscular neck with well-set shoulder and good depth of chest. Short compact body with well sprung ribs. Strong quarters. Stands on good feet. Moved out soundly with slashing tail.

An entry of 177 at this very friendly and busy show and as English Setters are always a pleasure to judge I had a most enjoyable day judging the bitches  with my co judge, Scotsman Gordon Hayburn over from Canada judging the dogs. Linda Harris who was also referee had shown her talents in organising a fantastic raffle table on an Olympic theme. Two large rings and plenty of quality.

Secretary Mrs Sharples and show secretary Anne Green and the team had everything running well.

The weekend was clouded for the English Setter world by the death of Gordon Williams of Bournehouse fame and the show started with a minute’s silence with all exhibitors coming into the rings as a mark of respect for a man who has contributed so much to the breed with a dynasty of lovely dogs and also Cocker spaniels; A Crufts Best in Show winning English Setter and Reserve at Crufts with a cocker; that is some achievement. My co- judge was in ready agreement that the bitch SH CH SORBUS JUST ANOTHER DAY should be BEST IN SHOW with the reserve CC bitch winner MARIGLEN BEAUTIFUL DAWN taking Reserve with the tricolour dog UPPERWOOD IN THE GROVVE taking Best Opposite Sex after winning his first CC in strong competition.

For Best Puppy we called on the services of the referee as we liked both puppies and stood firm with our choices. Linda chose the orange  dog RAVENSETT FIRE’N’ICE over the bitch puppy RACHDALE ELEGANCE  and they both look set fair for good futures.

RACHDALE ELEGANCE – a beautiful orange who stood out for me; everything to like from her beautiful head to her good topline and croup and tail set and her carriage. She can strengthen a little behind yet but she looked a picture of type and quality and I was happy to see her as Best Puppy bitch and trust she will go on to do very well.
2 RACHDALE PAINTED LACE OVER GOLDBIRCH – blue litter sister and another good one with great Setter style and good movement. Not quite as forward in head as her sister or quite the bone but she has lovely balance and topline and was presented  in sparkling form

2 HAWLAWN KALEIDOSCOPE – 9 months tri with very good body shape and movement which won her this place with correct croup and tailset and carriage. Feminine head which needs a little more time and a shade darker eye would enhance. Has a lot of quality

1 PHENSETT SIVER MOON-very stylish blue in full coat and moving well holding a strong topline which won her this close decision. Feminine head and good eye. She could be a little stronger in bone and feet but her reach and forhand and her style took the class
2 SUNSPRAKE SUMMER BREEZE – lovely headed orange in immaculate condition and better in bone and feet than the winner but not the scope in her front angulation and stride. Lovely ribs – I would have been happy with either of these veterans going through.
Junior – an excellent class with the top four very close
1 GILLANCETTE PEBBLES FOR TATTERSETT – Orange of lovely type and proportions. Lovely legs, feet, ribbing topline and croup and absolutely true on the move – quality in head. Just scored in her firmness in topline to win this…and later two more classes and the final cut in the challenge
2 RICHECCA MIDNIGHT MELODY has style and elegance by the ton and such scope on the move with lashing tail. Not quite as firm in topline or elbow as the winner and I think a bigger ring would have suited her. Good head and I slightly preferred her expression to the winner. Pressed hard and another who should do well
3 BOURNEHOUSE SASH OF GOLD AT GOLDBIRCH

1LAKECASTLE KASUMI AT WISTASTON- classy  top sized light tri bitch with great body and fantastic forehand assembly. Her head needs handling to be appreciated. Ultra sound on the move. She could be a little firmer in condition  but scored heavily on her finish of chest and body to take this class
2 SKYLARK OF ROSETIMBER- gorgeous orange bitch with great quality in outline and carriage and a beautiful head and expression. Very good on the move and her topline and croup and tail carriage appealed greatly. Can fill out a little in front but she looked a picture and I liked her enormously.

She is a little overangulated behind  which just lowers her a little to the ground on the move but she was a good winner of this class and made the cut in the challenge
2 BOURNEHOUSE WATERMUSIC AT SEVERNSETT – 4 years feminine blue with quality in headpiece and is well assembled and sound on the move. I preferred the bone of the winner Scored in rear angulation to take this place

1 MARIGLEN MERCEDES – 3 year old blue in excellent form. Unexaggerated and honest all through and has good movement and  a firm topline which won her the class. Could be just a little shorter  perhaps for perfect balance but she is well ribbed back with correct croup. Appealled in head and expression
2 QUENSHA SUMMER NIGHTS AT LYNWOOD – This beautiful orange filled my eye when I saw her standing in the line with her outline, angulation and beautiful head and eye-everything I like for type but on the move  her topline and croup could have been better and this decided the issue. Moves with scope and accuracy

so well made. Lovely shape and conformation, good head, dark eye giving a soft expression, good neck, great shoulders, good bone. Gave his handler a hard time but once settled moved purposefully of short hocks.

In lovely coat and condition, sound positive mover with powerful drive.

Thank you for the invitation to judge for my favourite society, and for their hospitality. Thanks also to my excellent, and very efficient stewards.
I found several exhibits to be soft in condition, and some overweight, the wet winter and difficult exercising conditions obviously playing a part in this. Placings could also be affected by handlers who were unable to move their dogs at the correct speed.

MINOR PUPPY DOG(5)
Some lovely puppies to start the day, first three all presented and handled immaculately.
1. McCabe’s Rachdale Sea Pearl Best Puppy Dog, and Res Best Puppy in Show
Blue with beautiful head and neck into good shoulders. Standing on good tight feet. 2 months ahead of the 2nd which showed in stronger body and depth, and more drive when moving.
2. Collier’s Gamerights Mr Blue Sky At Roszarke
Blue baby of 6 months, who is very promising. Lovely head and eye, clean neck and shoulder lines, good angles all through, and very fluent on the move for a baby.
3. Mellish’s Walshaw Blinded By Love For Monbrec

Another very attractive orange with most lovely head and typical cheeky puppy expression, also nicely constructed. Could have been my winner, but out moved by the first, as a tad overweight.

Tri dog in a bigger mould than the winner, who consequently needs more time to mature, an d come together. Well constructed all through. Presented in excellent coat and condition, and moved out well.

This Orange was the winner in a strong class. He is an elegant yet masculine dog with a correct outline. Liked his head and eye with correct mild expression. Very well presented in fit muscular condition, and good coat. Has the required free and powerful movement coming from good angulation all through. Should have a promising future.
2. Stubbington’s Quensha Oh What A Night At Bondgate
Dark tri with kind expression and dark eye. Heavier all through than the w inner, but well constructed with good strong quarters , which showed in sound free movement.

Light Blue, stood out in this class. A dog I have liked previously, and no reason to change my mind. A glamourous, eyecatching boy presented in beautiful coat, and condition, and handled well. Correct front and rear angulation give a balanced outline, and strong , sound ground covering movement. Considered in the challenge.
2. Tucker and Bryant’s Mandyset Can I Get A Witness For Friarsoak
Dark tri with lovely kind expression. Not a flashy dog but good all through and well presented. Not the free movement of first, and a little overweight.

Mature Orange presented in good coat and condition. Kind head and eye .Presented a balanced picture standing , and moved out with long free strides from well angulated quarters.

Upstanding tri in full coat, very well presented. Nice head and dark eye. Sound on the move, but still needs time to mature.

Masculine light tri, in superb coat beautifully presented. Super body condition, and well handled. Strong dog who exhibits power and style on the move.
2. Trigwell’s Hannahdene Status Quo
More compact balanced tri, who is correct in conformation, and also moved out very well. Close up but just preferred head of winner.

1. Watkins ‘ Sh Ch Mariglen Snowdrift At Hayworth
Elegant tri I have judged before, and consider him a very worthy title holder. He is built on classic lines with style and balance but still masculine. He has a gorgeous head, eye and expression, flows over the head, neck and shoulder, into strong topline, with strength over loin, and powerful hindquarters. Has improved in body since I judged him as a youngster, and now presents the picture of a mature English male, perfectly presented in full gleaming coat. Showed his exuberant personality on the move , ably controlled by his expert handler. Very pleased to award him CC, and finished BIS.
2. McCrindle’s Caleydene Travelling Man
Another very nice Tri dog with attractive, gentle, melting expression. Not a flashy dog with no exaggerations, but he has excellent angulation, balanced all through, and was presented in full coat, with strong muscular body .This was evident in his powerful ground covering stride on the move. I was very happy to award him the Res. CC. and he is a worthy title holder.

1st Tucker’s Walshaw Date with Destiny: What a sweetie! Nicely balanced puppy with good make and shape. Loved her head and expression which just stole her this class. Short coupled, well ribbed with strong topline. Really collected on the move for such a baby showing drive, precise footfall and a lovely slashing tail.
2nd McCabe’s Rachdale Sea Pearl: Attractive orange – built on a bigger frame than the class winner and mature for her age. Scored here with her good overall confirmation, strong quarters and pleasing tail set. Very nicely presented and with excellent muscle tone.

Puppy Bitch 9 (1 abs)
1st Goutorbe’s Upperwood Goldilocks: Eye-catching dark orange. Super flowing lines to this young bitch from her reachy neck, good front, correct shoulders, strong straight topline to her well angulated quarters. Very sound on the move showing drive and style with excellent tail carriage and action. Pleased to award her Best Puppy Bitch and she put in a good performance later in the day to beat a very nice dog puppy for the Best Puppy in Show award.
2nd Williams’s Bournehouse Starry Night: Really liked this tri puppy – she is of lovely type and quality. Balanced throughout with correct front assembly, best of toplines and tailset and well developed quarters. Sound, happy mover. She needs more trimming to really accentuate her lovely outline but once this is sorted she should have a bright future.
3rd Montell’s Culverwell Calamity Jane:

Veteran Bitch 3
1st Mitchell & Withey’s Sunsprake Finn’s Fantansy with Scratchwood JW: I just love the head on this bitch – it is so feminine with such work, darkest of eyes with the most beautiful expression and amazingly for her 11 years she has not lost her lovely orange markings. Just beginning to soften in topline now but age hasn’t had much effect on her movement – she is still moving better than many of the younger bitches around today. It was this movement – neat and tidy at the front and with strength and drive from the rear that won her this class and also Best Veteran in Show.
2nd Goutorbe’s Redhara Penelope Pitstop: Lovely balance to this dark blue bitch. Sweet head and expression. Good angulation, short deep body, strong topline and excellent tailset. Sound, exuberant mover but not the clean front action of the class winner.
3rd Davis’s Culverwell Calypso of Merleycopse

Junior Bitch 8 (1 abs)
1st Dennis’s Mariglen Xanthe JW: Classy bitch from any angle. Very feminine all through even though she is of good size with plenty of substance. Particularly scored here with her excellent forehand construction, and overall balance. Sound mover with strong drive from the hocks and correct tail carriage and action. Already quite mature and once in full coat she will certainly be very hard to beat.
2.nd Sykes’s Daraquist Abbi Riginal: Lovely clean outline on this bitch.Well made throughout with good front, strong topline , correct tailset and a sweet head and expression. Moves with drive and purpose covering plenty of ground with minimum effort. Not as forward as the class winner at the moment but a smart bitch who should finish well.

1st Mugford’s Quensha Summer Nights at Lynwood JW: Well made orange. Out of coat today but that makes it all the easier to appreciate her qualities and balanced outline. 2nd Davis’s Richecca Baby Doll of Merleycopse: Attractive tri. Nicely balanced with good reach of neck, depth of body and strong quarters. Well presented and handled. Not moving as positively as the class winner today.

1st Stephenson & Williams’s Lakecastle Sakura at Wistaston: Pale orange with beautiful head and eye. Good size – particularly liked her length of leg to back ratio giving that elegant outline. Excellent front, good bone and neat feet. Beautifully presented with coat of correct texture. Moved very well with a good even stride holding her topline and using her tail well.

However she has many of the same attributes and for me the better head of the two. Add to this her glorious tricolour markings and she has the potential to go to the top – make the most of her!.

Undergraduate Bitch 4 (1 abs)
1st Harris’s Gemsett Ultra Violet: Balanced bitch with clean outline. Good length of leg, short back, pleasing angulation. Seemed very unsettled in the last class but more relaxed here. Nicely presented and carrying the correct amount of weight. Moved well with good profile movement showing reach and drive.
2nd Williamson’s Balvenie Sheer Surprise: Another bitch that has good ratio of leg length to back measurement. Pleasing overall make and shape, feminine head and good expression. Not the body of the class winner and needs more attention to presentation to realise her potential.

Graduate Bitch 3 (1 abs)
1st Spencer’s Sorbus Just Another Day: Quality orange. Not a big bitch but so well put together – my notes say “ what a neat package!” Very pretty head, good front, strong bone, neat feet. Super spring of ribs, level topline and correct tailset. Moved with drive and style with ever slashing tail. Beautifully presented in full coat of lovely silky texture.
2nd Darley’s Bournehouse Water Music at Severnsett JW: Beautiful blue of lovely type. Another quality bitch with a feminine head and typical expression. Moved very well – soundly and happily. Presented in super coat and condition and is maturing well and fulfilling her early promise.

Postgraduate Bitch 9
1st Grimsdell’s Tattersett Frankel JW: Balanced blue with very good overall make and shape. Plenty of substance to this young bitch but she still retains her femininity. Attractive head, clean over neck and shoulders, good straight front and unlike most exhibits today – neat feet! Stylish and precise on the move showing power and drive from her short hocks.
2nd Jennings’s Canteris Careless Whisper: Ultra feminine orange with lovely head and expression. Elegant reach of neck leading into strong topline, good depth of body and well angulated quarters. Quality bitch who is maturing nicely and now carrying a good coat of the correct silky texture. Moved very well with good tail action. Close decision – just not the tight feet of the class winner

Mid-Limit Bitch 8 (1 abs)
1st Harris & Dennis’s Mariglen Gift Wrapped JW: Tricolour bitch of lovely make and shape. Scored here with her beautiful head and expression and her overall balance – everything fitting together smoothly with no exaggerations. She presents an elegant outline, combining substance with femininity. She moved soundly with pleasing high head carriage, holding her shape well and using her well set tail to advantage. I loved her as a puppy and although she is far from fully mature and still lacking in coat her overall qualities and soundness won her this strong class and eventually the bitch CC.
2nd Buckley’s Fishwick Cookie Crumbles: Another very well made bitch – more compact than class winner with lovely reach of neck, straight front, short deep body and strong quarters giving a smart, eye-catching outline. Very attractive head with good expression. Really impressed on the move with her exuberant movement driving from short strong hocks to show good reach and drive and with a fabulous tail action – a real show girl.

1st Hartle’s Hartsett Cherry Bee JW: Very feminine orange with the most lovely head and dark expressive eyes. Correct straight front, excellent spring of rib and well angulated quarters. Beautifully presented in good coat. For me, carrying too much weight which affected her topline and movement – although she moved soundly and happily she lacked drive particularly in the challenge.
2nd Bryant & Hollis’s Phensett Silver Moon: Attractive blue with a super head and expression. Longer cast than the class winner but still retained a strong topline and good tailset. Moved soundly from her well developed quarters.

1st Littlechild’s Sh Ch Ravensett Blondie JW: Super orange – top quality all through. Ultra feminine bitch with the sweetest of heads, good reach of neck into clean shoulders, strong short body and well angulated quarters. Top this off with an immaculately presented full coat and hard muscular condition and it is easy to see why she has done so much winning. Thought she would be my main winner but in the challenge, although she moved well and with style, she was a little sluggish and the sharper front action of the Mid Limit winner just stole the award, so today she had to settle for the reserve CC.
2nd Cook’s Moorbrook Uptown Flirt at Pernickety ShCM: Orange of a different type. A heavier build than class winner but still retaining her femininity and top quality all through. Pleasing head with soft expression, good angulation, strong deep body, straight front, excellent bone. This bitch really comes into her own on the move with her free striding driving action – sound and precise with excellent tail action and she holds her shape so well. Very close decision.

Special Beginners Bitch 3
1st Seaman’s Mariglen Mercedes: Light blue youngster with good overall confirmation. Clean neck and shoulder, straight strong topline, excellent front. Only just over 12mths she still looks very puppyish when stood but see her move! One of the best movers here today with such a smooth, economical action – she really covers the ground, has drive from her short hocks and such precise footfall. Add to this her naturally high head carriage and slashing tail and she really catches the eye. Will be interesting to see her when mature and in full coat.

My thanks go to the Chairman, Show Manager, Committee of the M.E.S.S. and my stewards for their help and assistance and for making this a day to remember judging my first Championship Show appointment. Also to all exhibitors for their brilliant entry and for graciously accepting the decisions I made. Slightly concerned by the overall rear movement from many of the dogs, whether it down to lack of
preparation of show training, lack of correct exercise it is something that needs to be addressed. Otherwise we are going to completely lose that free, graceful and elegant movement that we once saw, expected and was known from our breed.

MPD (2) – 1st; Watts Jotunheim Limited Edition: Not much to choose between these two youngsters but winner a little more together on general development and movement. Well defined head, good reach from neck to withers, short coupled b/b
2nd; Whittington’s Juldeane Excaliber : Pleasing head with expressive eyes, more together on hindquarters than front,
slightly more rangier than 1 but will watch to see how he develops as quite liked his overall appearance and proportion.

PD (9,2) 1st; Bakers Mandysett Can I Get a Witness. BPD Very much together in shape and balance with good width & depth to body for his age. Loved his head and expression with the kindest of eye, bought back fond memories of one I owned years ago. Excellent forequarters, strong forearms but not overdone and with very tight feet. Good bend from stifle thru to hock. Unfortunately was later
overawed by his day out and let himself down in the challenge.

VD (9,1) 1st; Hammond’s Hartsett Paper Skye for Oaktrish BVD. Splendid class of oldies. Light O/B, correct shape and definition to head. Well constructed front quarters, kept his topline and shape on the move, still has the enthusiasm and positive movement of a youngster which won him this class. Well handled and presented.
2nd; Dennis’s Sh. Ch. Gemsett Dark Forces at Mariglen JW; Well coated balanced dark blue with very typical head and expression. Long neck into excellent return of upper arm with good depth and well sprung rib cage. Moved true but needed a tad more motivation.
3rd; Fisher’s Settaside Sorbet

JD (9,3) This class was perhaps my most difficult to assess due to the wide variation of growth and development , my first three were at a similar place in time and will probably exchange places.
1st; Marsden’s Upperwood in the Groove: L/ Tri, Good definition to head, kind eyes with low set ears. Long neck with good sweep to shoulders. Well up on feet which were tight and compact. Level topline which he kept when moving .
2nd; Price’s Bushbane Celtic Eclipse. Kind eye and good expression, level topline with correct tail set, stronger in hindquarters with quite good bend to stiffle.
3rd; Mottishaw’s Upperwood Hooray Henry

YD (7,1) 1st; Jolley & Taylor’s Wansleydale Tribute to Jolymore; O/B Distinct winner of class, Well worked head, excellent forehand with correct angles and depth . Very much together in all aspects, moved very soundly when settled. When fully developed would expect to see a less defined tuckup which will give more balance to body to complete picture.
2nd; Shadwell’s Canonsett Grin N ‘ Bear It; B/B with appealing but masculine head . Correct body proportions and reasonably balanced for age but not up to maturity of 1st place.
3rd; Hutchinson’s Mariglen Dancing Brave

MD (5) 1st; Hepburn’s Tattersett Don’t Push It: O/B Still very much the baby but had the presence and balance to win this class. Good well angulated shoulders with compact body and level topline. Best movement to win this class
2nd; Vickers Sodalitas Cool Diamond; Pleasing head, good reach of neck, angulated shoulders and depth to brisket. Level in topline and correct tailset.

2nd; Farquhar’s Shambellie Final Chapter

GD (3) 1st; Stephenson’s Wistaston Starting School at Steeplow; Masculine O/B dog with definition and work to a typical head that’s not overdone. Deep brisket with well angulated shoulders and well ribbed back. Strong hindquarters complete the picture. Best movement from this class.
2nd; Rush’s Tattersett Future Gamble; Another O/B dog of similar qualities with good shoulders, body shape slightly more compact still with balance. 3rd; Bacon’s Desert Dreamer

PGD (13,2) 1st; Mortimer’s Bournehouse Silver Quest at Phlerdor JW ShCM; CC & RBIS. My detailed notes made on the day just confirmed to me why I made this choice for the CC. Well handled and presented by owner I just loved the balance and elegance of this dog, maybe not the stature of some but still has strength in depth and quality. Appealing masculine head, correct depth to stop with expressive eyes and balanced muzzle. His front is correct with good layback to shoulders with elbows close to the body. Shoulders flow freely into the withers with ribs well sprung and extended back. The coupling is taut with good muscle leading to tail set well in line with back. To
complete, rear quarters compliment the forehand angulation. Movement was true with both reach and drive. Shown in good coat and condition.
2nd; Dykes & McCrindle’s Caleydene Travelling Man. Looking the best I have seen him and now very close to the mark.
Handsome head, well built tri with good length and layback to shoulders, well bodied and moved with purpose.
3rd; Trigwell’s Hannahdene Status Quo

MLD (8,2) 1st; Croft’s Fencefoot Fond Memory JW; Very presentable masculine O/B, well coated and very mature for age. Well constructed, good front with straight forearm, well up on tight feet. Correct shoulders, firm back and topline. Just needs that additional sparkle equired for that
final consideration.
2nd; Bridgewater, Davies and Jeffrey’s Brucelm Diamond Harry Rocks Bridgella, another well constructed masculine B/B dog. Correct front and shoulders, deep brisket and strong rear quarters. Good coat and condition.
3rd; Yarrow’s Lakecastle Going for Gold for Sorrodale

LD (10,2) 1st; Goutorbe’s Upperwood Signature by Redhara : Won this class on his positive movement. B/B that has a well defined asculine head, long neck, correct forequarters with good rear construction. Well handled and presented.
2nd; Mitchell and Withey’s Sunsprake Raging Storm over Scratchwood; O/B shown in very good coat and condition. Lovelly head and eyes, Good front construction, lacked that positive movement today that I know he has.
3rd; Harradine’s Mandysett Pop Idol at Halliana

OD (11,3) Enjoyable class with quality. 1st; Fisher’s Sh Ch Beechanger Wagtail JW; RCC. Worthy champion, very honest dog with nothing to dislike. Correct construction throughout , lovely long clean neck into excellent quarters with flawless outline. Moved with enthusiasm and drive, just a little more front extension than my second place to win this class, close decision for CC winner.
2nd; Sayers and Dennis’s Sh Ch Mariglen Blue Flame for Christter ; Another quality Champion. A head that oozes in character and xpression. Very elegant and balanced in appearance with correct conformation. Shown in perfect and hard condition.

Midland English Setter Championship Show 26th February 2012

Thank you to the Officers, Committee, exhibitors and dogs for a fantastic day. It was a great pleasure to judge our breed at such a special event with a super atmosphere.
As usual I prefer to give my own general observations. The exhibits are on view for all to see and for you to make your own opinions. I was surprised at the variation in types, this I feel has widened as lines are crossed. Heads I found difficult as many have not the expression I am looking for, some broad with too much width between the eyes others have the stop but are narrow and have not the width of foreface resulting in pinched nostrils. Many have lost the length to the upper arm, this restricts the dog’s fore movement and if correctly angled behind causes the dog to over reach. Tails have improved with not too many set on low, however many are lifted for balance and to compensate for their rear quarters not being underneath them. I felt very sad in the number of exhibits which have the tail problem due to total lack of condition; our breed is a galloping breed and should have the overall condition to develop muscle. I was aware that a number of the bitches gave their handlers a hard time and this was due to others showing the dogs owned by the committee, thank you for the entry. On looking round my ring at my final line up I felt we do have a future and let us hope these beautiful bitches go on to produce the stock to carry on the handsome English Setter.

Minor Puppy Bitch (8)
I love puppies, however this class did not help me at all when it came to movement as most took great delight in swinging on their leads and throwing themselves about.
1. Bridgewater, Davies, Slack and Littlechild’s Abiwrose Blue Lace with Brucelm. Beautiful head with melting expression, strong neck, correct lay of shoulder, round bone and tight feet. Super quarters should make a good one.
2. Naylor and Morrison’s Wansleydale Ribbons ‘N Lace Over Anlory. Such a baby but so correctly put together, best mover in class. Just needs the tlc. to encourage her to grow and bloom.
3. Rumble’s Jotunheim Va Va Boom

Puppy Bitch (4)
1. Grimsdell’s Tattersett Frankel. Balanced head, not over done in flew, gentle break giving beautiful soft expression. Correct lay, showing good shoulders and balance. Straight front with super round bone, She has the correct depth of rib and is short coupled so strong top line. Tail coming off back nicely and used on move.. Feet tight. Moved true. All this gave her the class,
BPB and in agreement with co-judge BPIS.
2. Baker’s Mandyset Whole Lotta Rosie. Heavier than one but a nice type. Skull balanced and break giving correct eye shape and expression. Angle and length of forearm balanced to length of leg. Super depth to forechest, short coupled with strong rounded quarters. Just tended to hug the floor till relaxed, needs to get out more. Tail set not as good as 1.
3. Neath’s Albadora Robin Daylite.


Veteran Bitch (8,4)
1. Harris and Dennis’ Sh Ch Mariglen Princess Royal at Gemsett. Such a classical shape to her skull, no exaggerations and with her dark eye she gave a melting expression. Clean over shoulders, she has length to her rib leading to round quarters. Good width on stifle showing fine sweep to hocks .This bitch has taken the stops off and moves without effort it was a pleasure to watch her and award her BVB then go on to take BVIS.
2.Mitchell and Withey’s Sunsprake Finn’s Fantasy with Scratchwood. Another one not showing her age, she brought a smile to me as she has the attributes so typical to our breed standard, substance with elegance and gives her handler the expression the breed is renowned for.
3. Morgan’s Mariglen Steals The Heart of Meandi.

Junior (7)
1. Harris and Dennis’ Mariglen Gift Wrapped JW. Feminine bitch but strong in body properties. Balanced head, kind, and dark eye. Straight in front. Her depth of chest and rib giving a strong level top line from which her tail extended correctly. She used her strong quarters to move without effort.
2. Buckley’s Fishwick Cookie Crumbles. Another with promise. Loved her expression and eye created by a balanced skull and correct break. Has a super lay and upper arm angulation but needs to drop in front, this I am sure will give more precise fore action to go with the reach already there. Strong top line and quarters which showed extension, just needs time to mature. Round bone and tight feet.
3. Bishop’s Dyrham Your So Sweet.

Special Yearling (8,3)
1. Howarth’s Moorbrook Mary Rose. Felt this bitch won this class with some to spare. Her head has brain room but is feminine and gives the desired expression. Has the required crest of neck head carriage, her forequarters allows her to move free and true whilst keeping a level top line.
Lovely tail placement and hind action.
2. Attwood’s Swannery Field of Dreams. My, what a hard time this young lady gave her handler. Liked her head and eye, good neck, not the forearm of one but has rounded quarters which she used well. Went steadier the more she moved.
3. Bates’s Valsett Starlite Ruby Blush at Tudorfield.

Maiden Bitch (6)
1. Grimsdell’s Tattersett Frankel.
2. Bishop’s Dyrham Your So Sweet. This lady gained a third in Junior in good company. Pleasing head with gentle expression, strong neck, straight front. Has the depth of rib but feel she has yet to drop in forechest. Level back, lovely length hip to hock which showed strength in movement. Time is on her side to mature and settle onto her frame to complete the promising picture.
3. Schoneville and Derry’s Balvenie Vee Marie.

Novice Bitch (4,1)
1. Bishop’s Dyrham Your So Sweet.
2. Jennings’ Canteris Careless Whisper. Bitch with the sweetest of heads and feminine expression. Has straight front and shows correct side angulation aided by a beautiful sweep from hip to hock. Feel she will take time to mature but will be worth the wait. Had a tendency to throw herself about making it difficult for her handler.
3. Tucker and Reith’s Walshaw Snow Flurry.

Tyro Bitch (1)
1. Loakes’ Mariglen Goldikova. Beautifully presented bitch. Deep in frame with strong quarters. Was unsettled to start with as on her own but got into the swing and moved well.

Undergraduate Bitch (5,3)
1. Montell’s Culverwell Constanza On first inspection I was impressed by the overall balance and elegance of this young lady and I was not disappointed when going over her. She has the tan marking rarely seen today and a beautiful head shape. Clean throughout, she moved as built flowing round the ring.
2. Sharples’ Mariglen Flaming Sunset. Different type to 1. Her overall angulation is good, but have written in my notes “Likes her dinners”. Not the forearm extension of 1.

Graduate Bitch (10,1)
1. Loynd’s Richecca Sea The Stars at Crimbledale. Have judged this one as a baby and I am delighted with her progress. What a lovely bitch. Super head with break and those “all important” raised eyebrows. Correct depth and width of skull. Clean neck, straight front. Has correct angulation and length of bone fore and aft. The above combined with the outgoing temperament required for our breed gave her this class.
2. Cockett’s Hollygrove Bezique. Another one with quality. Soft expression, crested neck, fine shoulders and level top line. Fine depth and spring of rib. Rounded quarters but lost out to 1 on let down to hock and feet.
3. Trigwell’s Hannahdene Marguerita Time.

Post Graduate Bitch (11)
A lovely class and unfortunately some missed out on the day.
1. Grimsdell’s Tattersett Doctor In Love. I have watched this bitch from the ring side and admired her. Has gentle work in her head, her eye could be darker but it does not take away from her expression. The strength in her construction and overall balance is evident in her movement. Feet excellent. Such a sound and happy mover.
2. Day’s Mandyset Rumour Has It at Descovery. Different in type to my class winner yet so many of the good points apply. Has the quality and substance with a classic head and level topline. Her super quarters showed lovely extension as she moved. Her tail never stopped wagging.
3. Bishop’s Dyrham Midnight Dream

Mid Limit Bitch (6,2)
1. Lawson’s Mariglen Ice Crystal JW. Have given this young lady a first before and my observations still apply to her. Classic head and eye. Presents a fine outline and moves well. Just needs her furnishings to complete the picture.
2. Tucker’s Walshaw Christmas Rose for Ownways JW. Nicely angulated orange with adequate bone and tight feet. Has the soft eye required for the breed. Moved true.
3. Rockall’s Settrenda Golden Fern at Lesnee

Limit Bitch (13)
Strong class of quality.
1. Littlechild’s Ravensett Blondie JW. My star of the day. Not a large one but a real diamond. Her head is well balanced. Not overdone in flew or depth of skull. Most beautiful shape to eye through break in skull. Ears folding from eye level close to neck. Neck has the required crest to make for good head carriage. Straight in front with rounded bone and tight feet. Heart and lung space without coarseness. Clean on shoulder due to correct shoulder placement, elbows under her but with room to move. Ribs deep and correctly sprung from front to hind. Coupling just right, not too long as to result in weakness of top line. Balanced sweep from hip to hock bone and good width of stifle. Short from hock bone to feet. I am sure she knew it was her day for her crown and moved accordingly. BCC and BIS.
2. Goutorbe’s Redhara Penelope Pitstop. When the first two in this class were standing before me for their critique I said I could take them both home, and this comment still stands. I loved this young lady from her beautiful head to her wagging tail. She was so near to gaining high honours, just felt she has that bit more to give and just needs to settle on herself. Sure her day will come.
3. Dykes’ Caleydene Remember Me

Open Bitch (7)
1. Morgan and Bott’s Sh Ch Quensha Little Jeanie JW. This was the second RCC that I have awarded this bitch. She is one for us to be proud of as she is so beautiful to go over and she fits the standard so very well. She lost out last time as she wasn’t a willing mover, today she moved so well but had left her best coat at home. Thank you for bringing her.
2. Williams’ Bournehouse Golden Days. What a lovely head this bitch has. She has that melting expression that our breed is known for. I admired her angulation from fore to aft. Her tail placement was as I would expect from this kennel, spot on. Strong quarters, good bone and feet. Was carrying just a little too much weight which showed when she moved.
3. Dennis’ Sh Ch Mariglen Francesca Fenston.

Special Beginners Bitches (6,1)
1. Sharples and Dennis’ Mariglen Crystal Gayle. Not as feminine in head as I like but still has a soft eye. Strongly made throughout and moved freely.
2. Saunders’ Shanandi Evening Star. Bitch with substance and soft expression was more settled standing and on the move in this class.

2. Bishop’s Dyrham Midnight Dream. Third in a good Post Graduate Class this attractive deep orange has a lovely expression with plenty of work in skull. Straight front and correct side profile. Happy on the move she moved with ease and precision.
3. Morgan’s Mariglen Steals The Heart of Meandi.
